Hi, I’m Gem.

Who am I?

I’m a quality engineer with 10 years experience under my belt. I’ve worked in scale-up, agency, and public service. I specialise in all-team-quality, accessibility, and psychological safety.

Testing is a passion of mine, I’ve always enjoyed thinking about how something could be used, not necessarily how it should be used, as well as unforseen implications of what we build.

About me

Background

I started off in tech as a digital support assistant back in 2013. I then started assisting the sole quiality engineer when I had a spare moment, and fell in love with testing.

I then started searching for a community, and fell head first into not only Ministry of Testing, but the wider Manchester tech scene.

From there I grew in my role and my career.

Quality engineering and helping teams build the best work they can is something I genuinely love doing. Whether it’s hands on exploratory testing or facilitating riskstorming workshops, I can help your team with their quality.

Experience

I’ve worked in a variety of roles and contexts, really stretching the flexibilty a quality engineer role can have. I’ve dabbled in security testing and threat modelling, scrum mastery, and support assistant.

In my more formal day job I’ve done hands on exploratory testing, coached teams in communication, testing, and requirements gathering, as well as building internal communities and champions networks. You can see my full CV here.

Leadership

I love setting up and building internal communities, building bridges between teams and departments. I’ve coached teams in example mapping, accessibility, and exploratory testing.

I’ve also helped with hiring programs and job descriptions, ensuring the right people are brought into teams.

Topics

Accessibility is a specialty of mine. I love doing accessibility audits and helping teams make their products as accesible and usable as possible.

My true passion is helping teams test more efficiently, starting from the earliest part of the SDLC (or in all parts of the DevOps loop, if you prefer).

I can facilitate (and create) workshops, put together quality maturity programs, teach and coach teams, and more.
